Costa Rica

The pineapple, exotic fruit par excellence, comes from South America: Costa Rica is one of the major producers. As a matter of fact the tropical climate of this country is ideal for growing fruit. The pineapple is thought to have origins in Southern Brazil and Paraguay, but it was already in Guadalupe when Christopher Columbus landed there in 1493. It reached England in 1660 and began to be grown in greenhouses in 1720.

This fruit touched the peak of its popularity in France under Louis XV’s reign on account of its juicy and sugary flesh. It has detoxifying properties and its cosmetic virtues have been long renowned: it is said that women living between the Tropic of Cancer and theTropic of Capricorn have always used its juice for a glowing complexion.
